Are Norway ski resorts good for skiing?
Yes! Thanks to their reliable snow records, Norway ski resorts boast one of the longest ski seasons in Europe, offering excellent skiing opportunities, especially for families and beginners. We recommend checking out some of Norway’s top resorts, such as Trysil, Hemsedal, and Hafjell, for some of the country’s best downhill slopes and cross-country routes.
When is the best time to book a ski holiday in Norway?
From November to May is a great time for skiing in Norway, thanks to the country's longer ski season. The resorts start opening in Norway as soon as the snow settles!
December to February offers the best snow conditions, but the days can be quite cold (so wrap up warm!). Be warned: the sun sets early here, but many resorts are floodlit, so you can still enjoy plenty of night skiing (and you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights!).
From March onwards, the days are longer, and the slopes often remain in excellent condition.
Are Norway ski resorts snow-sure?
Yes. Thanks to their northern latitude, Norway ski resorts enjoy one of Europe’s longest ski seasons and is incredibly snow-sure from November all the way to May.

Norway ski holidays to Hemsedal offer confident skiers the chance to carve down its selection of forest-lined blacks and reds. And Kvitfjell even has two Olympic-grade pistes that wind through the resort. You can also experience night skiing on one of its black runs.
If getting airborne excites you, be sure to check out Geilo. It has been voted Norway's best snowboard park which comes as no surprise as former X-Games gold medal winner Andreas Håtvedt heads it up.
What are the best ski resorts for off-piste skiing in Norway?
Hemsedal offers some of the best off-piste in Norway, thanks to its steep slopes, ease of access and a vertical drop of 800m. The area is also a great place to explore the wider mountains and try backcountry skiing (away from the resorts) with a mountain guide.
Some of Norway's best ski resorts for off-piste skiing can be found at Gausta. Home to the steep chutes of the Gaustatoppen mountain, it's both challenging and exhilarating.
What are the best ski resorts for snowboard holidays in Norway?
Trysil snowboarding holidays are great for beginners and intermediates. Mellow terrain and excellent instructors get beginner snowboarders carving with confidence. Wide-open pistes give intermediate snowboarders the space to perfect their carving. And it’s also home to some of Norway's best freestyle parks. The ‘Snow Park Trysil’ is floodlit even at nighttime.
Hemsedal has something for everyone. The big backcountry keeps powderhounds happy, and it’s home to some fantastic freestyle terrain. Throw in the lively apres-ski and nightlife, and it’s a great choice.
For beginners, intermediates and freestyle addicts, Norway snowboarding holidays should be high on your list. However, be mindful of resorts with shallower terrain and lower vertical drops to avoid those pesky flats.
What are the best ski holidays in Norway for ski weekends or short breaks?
Norefjell is just a two-hour transfer from Oslo Airport, making it ideal for ski weekends and short breaks. Another option for enjoying a short ski break in Norway is flying to Bergen. Here you’ll be far closer to some of the more westerly resorts such as Voss.
Are Norway ski resorts expensive to ski in?
Norway can be considered expensive when compared to other European ski destinations, such as Bulgaria, Andorra, and Poland. However, in reality, prices here match those of most resorts in France, Austria, and Italy, with some fantastic deals available if you know where to look outside of peak times, thanks to its exceptionally long ski season and excellent snow reliability.
What are the best Norway ski holidays for après-ski?
Trysil offers a great selection of après bars, with live music and cosy settings a-plenty. Meanwhile, a Norway ski holiday in Hemsedal, with its vibey party atmosphere, gives Alpine après a run for its money.
However, please note: Don’t expect to come to Norway and find the riotous party scenes that you get in the French Alps. The prohibitive costs of alcohol partly curb that. (Wily travellers stock up on duty-free.) That said, most resorts have bars and clubs with live music or karaoke at the base of the slopes, or rustic pubs with tons of atmosphere, serving not just beers and cocktails but also great food.
